Of the seven ponds with which Ogiński family decorated the homestead of Rietavas Manor in the 19th century, Malūno pond is the largest. Four islands lend a special charm to it. M. K. Čiurlionis once admired the views of the islands. In one of them, the Island of Musicians, farewell concerts of Rietavas and Plungė musicians would take place. M. K. Čiurlionis played flute here as well.
Viewed from the side of the Red Gate Avenue, the silhouettes of the pond islands draw the contours of Čiurlionis’ painting Serenity. It is not by accident that fosterers of Rietavas’ cultural heritage recommended to name these islands Serenity, Evening and Altar.
