St. Michael the Archangel Church (Senoji Varėna (Old Varėna), Vytauto g. 196)

In 1994, a new church was built on the site of the old church, destroyed during World War I. The project by architects Brunonas Bakaitis and Gediminas Baravykas employed forms and rhythms characteristic of M. K. Čiurlionis’ art. The bell tower of the sanctuary and the bell tolling in its open space resemble the bell tower in the painting Pavasaris (Spring). The fact of M. K. Čiurlionis’ baptism is inscribed on the commemorative plaque (author Mantas Paulauskas) and documented on stained glass windows (author Vytautas Švarlys) of today’s church. Every year the St.Michael the Archangel Church hosts the M. K. Čiurlionis Route’s music program organised in collaboration with the Lithuanian Musicians’ Support Foundation. The program takes place during the Druskininkai Summer with M. K. Čiurlionis festival.
