Raigardas Valley (Švendubrė village)

Raigardas Valley is a valley on the right bank of the Nemunas river, 5 km south of Druskininkai, a place surrounded by legends and myths, loved by the artist M. K. Čiurlionis, and immortalized in his triptych Raigardas.

“And above those riverbanks, above that beloved Nemunas, the sky is so bright, so gentle, so Lithuanian – you just can’t look away. Then the heart begins to beat faster, and the soul rejoices with an anthem to the One who gave you Lithuania as your homeland. Oh, and beautiful our Lithuania is. Beautiful in its sadness, beautiful in its simplicity and heartiness. Here there are no sky-reaching mountains, no roaring cascades. Just look around! What a tearful simplicity in this spectacle. ” (From the diaries of M. K. Čiurlionis, 1900).
